Congratulations to the CT Board and thanks to those of you who are re- volunteering. Please mark Feb 5th as the date for the annual Leadership Symposium for your Pres. or delegate to meet and brainstorm with all APLD Chapter and District reps. You will be meeting in Harrisburg, PA. Details to follow. Meanwhile, how can APLD help you to increase awareness of the value of Landscape Design as a profession? Forward your suggestions to your President and bring to the Symposium. I hope the CT. Chapter has a lively, interesting, and networkiing filled year. Ellen Johnston, APLD , Chapter Chair Laison

Amy, thanks for commenting. How does anyone remove 2 acres of vegetation without any soil disturbance? Well that's easy, Roundup the whole property and scalp it with a string trimmer or lawn mower. The problem is it wouldn't be the most environmentally friendly approach. The answer I was looking for was how I was going to remove the vegetation with the least environmental impact and soil disturbance. If you look at a york rake, it' s basically a large fork. I figured if we could run the york rake at grade we would grab a lot of vegetation along the way without much disturbance. If you aren't willing to broadcast Roundup, at some point you will disturb soil. The chain link fence came through our own New England heritage. Farmers have used similar contraptions over the years for various farm projects. Depending on the task, cinder blocks were added or removed to adjust grading depth. I wasn't sure if it would work but it was something we have used before for grading and I was willing to try again. Not to be overlooked, the budget allowed for man hours to scout and remove weeds on an annual basis. There have been plenty of weeds that have infiltrated the space that needed to be dealt with.

Very interesting to hear actual details of a meadow creation project. This information is hard to come by. I found the method of vegetation removal especially curious, and I'd like to know how Richard hit upon it. It seems to me that chain link fence and cinder blocks dragged behind a tractor would cause significant soil disturbance, but perhaps this is in comparison to other methods considered. In any case, more please!
